Passing the Torch

Kevin Gundlach Steps Down From Norfolk Now

Behind the scenes of each issue of Norfolk Now that hits local mailboxes at the beginning of every month lie many hours of not only writing and editing, but also many layouts, designs and re-designs before it is completed. Obviously, the editors put in numerous hours on this, but the layout and design person is working behind the scenes, making the paper look pleasing to the eye and easy to read.

For the majority of the past 19 years, that layout and design person has been Kevin Gundlach, who this month announced that he is retiring from his position with Norfolk Now. He took over the design position back in 2006 and was responsible for the layout and design of the paper every month for the first 14 years after he assumed the role. Over the last several years, duties have been shared with several other designers.

Concerning his retirement from Norfolk Now Gundlach said, “I have worked with five or six ad managers, easily 20 or so editors…and have seen countless board members come and go. It’s time to retire.” He is not going far, however, as he has offered to fill in when needed.

Ann DeCerbo will be assuming the position of Layout and Design Manager—the same person from whom Gundlach inherited the position so many years ago. The cycle of designers has come full circle.
