Board of Education Cancels Meeting
By Avice Meehan
The Nov. 11 Board of Education meeting was cancelled for lack of a quorum. The next scheduled meeting, which will include newly elected board members, is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 5:30 p.m., at Botelle School.
Had it met, the board was scheduled to hear a report from the Policy Committee, chaired by Jay Whitaker, including a first reading of policies related to management of the school library and guidelines for responding to complaints about instructional materials in the library. Whitaker, whose term has since ended, did not attend. The proposed policy states that any written complaint would be managed by a review committee appointed by the school superintendent and that the material would remain in circulation until a final decision is made.
Two new and one returning board member will join the board in December. The newly elected members are Republican Michael Listorti and Democrat Jeremy Withnell. Veteran board member Donna Rubin, a Republican, was re-elected. Petitioning candidate Kimberly Thorne-Kaunelis was unsuccessful in her effort to rejoin the board in the only contested race in the recent town elections.
