Swap Shop Success
By Andra Moss
A year and a half has sped by since volunteers Susan Sloan and Kathy Connolly opened the Norfolk Swap Shop in a shipping container on the grounds of the Norfolk Transfer Station. Their constant thoughtful attention has made it a pleasant stop for dropping off gently used items and browsing for lucky finds.
“We have had great donations from the community, and I think everyone has had a positive experience finding goodies to take home and enjoy,” says Sloan. These can include housewares and garden supplies, tools, toys and appliances—even, recently, a brand-new dishwasher. Sloan and Connolly have also welcomed a new addition to their group of volunteers. “Lynn Clayton has been helping us organize the shop for months and is an invaluable part of our crew,” says Sloan.
The small-but-mighty team is looking forward to another successful year focused on redistributing needed items and keeping them out of landfills. Icebox weather permitting, they hope to be able to stay open during the winter and for the holidays. For now, the Norfolk Swap Shop is open during regular transfer station hours, Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
