Heard Around Town

A Colebrook Barn
Fans of the ethereal photography of Michaela Allam Murphy might want to stop by the Icebox Café to see her ongoing series capturing the evolution of a hay barn in neighboring Colebrook. By day, Murphy can be found at George’s Norfolk Garage. In the evenings, as she notes in a lovely essay posted with the hay barn series, she thinks about the night sky and starlight, “traveling like a voice in the wind.”

Murphy’s approach is to return, again and again, to photograph the same place at different times, in changing light and over a period of years. As she notes, hay barns are built to leak air. When unused, the boards shrink—both leaking and capturing light. This particular series, framed by Turi Rostad, will be up for several months and provides companionship over a quiet cup of coffee and fresh scone. All are for sale.

Baked With Love
Volunteer bakers with the Ministry of Bread group working out of the kitchen of the Battell Chapel of the United Church of Christ once again mixed, zested and floured their way to some 200 cranberry orange quickbread loaves for inclusion in the UCC’s Thanksgiving baskets. Bread enthusiasts are welcome to join them for 2026 baking; the group meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month to share, practice and enjoy the craft of bread making.
