Gliding into the Green Woods
Bundled up against temperatures in the low teens, Norfolk resident Jenny Pres-ton set off from the East Entrance of the Great Mountain Forest (GMF) for a re-cent solitary ski, a familiar routine since big snow storm on Jan. 25. Although the trails are not yet groomed, skiers have laid down a good track though portions of the 6,300-acre forest. “Cross-coun-try skiing is like moving meditation, when you are skiing you are not think-ing about anything else except the next glide,” says Mike Zarfos, GMF’s execu-tive director. The snow is likely too deep for hikers, but snowshoers are asked to stay clear of the ski tracks to preserve the smooth path. Skiers and snowshoers can also enter GMF through the West Gate near 200 Canaan Mountain Road in Falls Village. So glide away, but bring water, snacks and a phone.
