Vegetables Needed
The Mission Committee of the Norfolk Church of Christ Congregational UCC is supporting Harvest Now, a food growing charity that donates fresh produce to Connecticut food banks. If you have a garden, or are willing to grow vegetables to donate, please contact Tom Vergo at 379-3461 or thomasvergo01@earthlink.net. The Missions Committee will coordinate pick-up and delivery of all donated produce to FISH in Torrington.
Chasing Dragons at GMF
Children ages 8 and up are invited to join a dragonfly study on Wednesday, July 3 at Great Mountain Forest. A group of teenagers from Roaring Brook Nature Center under the guidance of director Jay Kaplan are spending part of their four-day “Chasing Dragons” program at the forest. Aton Forest Workshops
A Sedge Identification workshop with Bill Moorhead will be held at Aton Forest on Wednesday, July 10 and Thursday, July 11 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. This plant identification workshop focuses on field identification, ecology and indicator value of genus Carex, i.e. the “sedges”, which are considered a cryptic group. $150 tuition includes lunch and refreshments. Speaker at Colebrook Historical Society
Cheryl Heller, an award winning designer, writer and business strategist, will be giving a talk entitled “Reasons for Optimism: New Social and Bio Technologies That Will Change the Future” at the Colebrook Historical Society on Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. Heller is known for her critical work with the School of Visual Arts in New York, Pop Tech, Leadership Education at AIGA, and the “Sappi Ideas That Matter Program”. Join us for refreshments and lively conversation. All are welcome.
Vintage Cars, Classic Fun
Norfolk’s vintage car owners will be bringing their antique vehicles out of the garage and on to Station Place for the benefit of the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department. More than 30 cars will be on display at the Classic Community Classic Car Show, planned for Sunday, July 14 from noon to 4 p.m. Organized by ArtsWave and sponsored by National Iron Bank, the event will also feature music, food, raffles and fun for all ages. Come and see some of the hidden treasures of Norfolk and enjoy a fun day in the center of town.
Northwest Corner Triad Workshop
A free workshop, “The Latest Developments in Medicare Fraud: What It’s Costing You and How to Prevent It” will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at the Noble Horizons Wagner Learning Center, 17 Cobble Rd. in Salisbury from 2 to 4 p.m. Anna Ferreira-Pandolfi, Special Agent with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will present an experienced law enforcer’s account of the extensive and expensive incidence of Medicare fraud. Co-sponsored by Northwest Corner Triad, Noble Horizons and Salisbury Bank, all are invited to attend. Reservations are encouraged. New Deadline for Arts Scholarships
Completed applications for the Battell Arts Foundation Scholarships are due on Thursday, August 1. These scholarships are awarded twice a year to school-age young people from Norfolk and Colebrook for the purpose of enhancing their education in the visual and performing arts. Summer Fitness Classes
New summer fitness classes start in July at the Church of Christ Congregational. Kristin Mudge will continue to offer the Monday night Dance Fitness class at 5:30 p.m., but also a new class called Dancefit Light, a streamlined introductory class from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. on July 3, 10 and 17 and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on July 11 and 18. Drop in on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for Bill Couch’s Body Blast or try Zumba with Christine Royer on Saturday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. All classes are $10 ($5 for students and seniors) and are held in the chapel.
