Tax Everyone or No One

Letter to the Editor

In past years, Norfolk has never taxed people on their individual personal property, and most neighboring towns don’t, either.  The personal property tax applies only to business property, but for some reason this year, our tax assessor sent out assessment forms, but only to certain taxpayers. When I received one, I just assumed that everyone received one but I found out differently.

It was brought to my attention that not everyone in town received this form for claiming personal property tax, but apparently certain people were singled out to receive the form, while other people never did.  Since everyone in town didn’t receive a form to fill out, I feel that I and the others who did receive it are being unfairly taxed.

Because every individual personal property owner didn’t receive this form, I believe we who did receive these forms should refuse to pay the tax.  The outrageous bill I received for my personal (not business) property was discriminatory and I cannot pay it unless everyone else in town is taxed the same way.

Everyone who received a personal property tax bill should review it closely to be sure it’s for business property only, not personal.
