Celebration caps off the high school years

Usually, Northwestern Regional’s graduation takes place at the Warner Theatre in Torrington. This year, due to Covid, it was moved to Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford, which provided a socially distanced and open-air arena for the graduates, administration, and family. Covid made it difficult for the class of 2021 to enjoy traditional events such as their junior prom and sports seasons. However, holding the ceremony at Dunkin’ Donuts Park gave the graduates a treat after the tough year and a half they have had.
When asked about the ceremony, graduate Kendra Link responded, “My experience was better than I could have imagined, and my class and I are so lucky and thankful for this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Although Covid-19 tested us all with an unprecedented year full of hardships and challenges, I have seen before my eyes just how successful we can be if we all work as a team with patience, kindness, and determination.”
Another tradition that changed was the in-person band playing classic graduation songs such as “Pomp and Circumstance.” Since Dunkin’ Donuts Park is too large for the band to play with good sound, they recorded the songs instead. This also allowed the seniors to play the ceremony pieces, which is a first for Northwestern graduations.
Graduation speakers and Project Graduation went on as in any other year. Some of the speakers included Valedictorian Ellie Crone, Superintendent Judy Palmer and Principal Gary Franklin. 

Project Graduation, an afterparty, open to graduates and their families, and was held at the Granby YMCA.

Moving on after high school is a very intimidating thing, especially as everyone navigates the aftermath of Covid-19. When asked to reflect on what she will miss most about Northwestern, graduate Morgan Yelsits responded, “I’m going to miss having everything set up for me. It’s scary now that the future is entirely in my hands, but I’m also excited to see where I end up.”
