Winter WIN Is Coming Up Soon

Winter WIN (Weekend In Norfolk) will take place again this month, Feb. 25-27, with a wintery mix of in-person and virtual events happening around town. The goal of WIN weekends is to showcase the creative talent in Norfolk and help build community. The WIN team is still planning events as of this writing, so what follows is only a partial list.

Saturday, Feb. 26 

From 10 to 11 a.m., the Norfolk Library will a host a creative art display celebrating the library made by the children of Norfolk. Special treats will be served.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Husky Meadows Farm will demonstrate how to inoculate and grow your own shiitake mushrooms on hardwood logs at the Seed and Spoon building, 26 Doolittle Drive. Grow-your-own logs will be available to purchase and take home. Light refreshments will be offered. The event is free to the public, but RSVPs via the farm’s website are appreciated.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Immaculate Conception Church will hold open hours in the sanctuary for sharing information about the church, its building history and the stained glass windows. Printed materials will be available, and docents will be on hand to answer any questions.
From 1 to 4 p.m., Battell Chapel will be open for viewing the stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and David Maitland Armstrong.  Covid precautions will be observed: everyone must wear a mask and social distance must be maintained at all times. The chapel also houses the Clothes Closet, where the clothes are free, and people are welcome to take or donate items. 

At 4 p.m., Ann Havemeyer will be give a Zoom talk titled “Ladies, Legends & Lakeside Dwellings: Alfredo Taylor in Norfolk.” To register, go to the library’s website or call the circulation desk at 860-542-5075.

From 3 to 5 p.m., the Norfolk Curling Club will be demonstrating the basics of curling, and visitors are welcome to give it a try. This event will be in conjunction with the fire department’s bonfire and skating event at the rink by the town baseball field. The curling club will be serving hot chocolate and snacks in addition to s’mores being offered by the fire department.

From 5 to 7 p.m., the Norfolk Library invites 9th to12th graders to come inside from the cold, hang out with their friends and enjoy a free slice or two of pizza. Please register in advance on the library’s website or call the circulation desk at 860-542-5075. The library will be closed to the general public during this time. 

Sunday, Feb. 27 

From noon to 1 p.m., following Mass,  the sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception Church will be open to visitors. See fuller listing under Saturday. 
From 1 to 4 p.m., Battell Chapel will be open. See fuller listing under Saturday.

At 4 p.m., the Norfolk Historical Society will be presenting via Zoom a talk by Ariel Picton Kobayashi entitled “Ski Jumping in the Northeast: Small Towns and Big Dreams.” Books will be available for purchase on the historical society’s website and at the Norfolk Library.

Martiña Gago’s Zoom demonstration on Spanish cooking will be prerecorded and available on the WIN website. Gago is from Galicia, in northwestern Spain above Portugal.
