Art Exhibit at the Norfolk Library
On display for the month of June will be the work of Lauren Packard, a queer, abstract, mixed-media artist living in Brooklyn. There will be a reception for the artist on Sunday, June 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by the Norfolk Library Associates.
Farmers Market Opens
The first farmers market of the 2022 season will be on June 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the lawn outside Town Hall.
Community Drawing Classes Resume
Community drawing classes are being offered again this June at the Yale Norfolk School of Art. Classes are held in the Art Barn, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and at 10 a.m. on Saturdays.
Honoring Jan Rathbun
The Colebrook Historical Society will host an open house on Sunday, June 5,, from 3 to 5 p.m. At 4 p.m. there will be a special tribute to Jan Rathbun, who was involved with many organizations in both Colebrook and Norfolk. The open house also marks the unveiling of the summer-long exhibit of the art of painter Germaine Lemieux. The gathering will be held at the Seymour Inn, at the intersection of Routes 183 and 182A. Art School Lecture Series
The Yale Norfolk School of Art is presenting a public lecture series this month on the topic “The Shape of Empathy.” All lectures will be in the newly renovated Art Barn. For a full listing, with dates and times, see the ad on p. xxx.
“Trash Talk” with Matt Riiska
First Selectman Matt Riiska will update attendees on the trash and recycling hurdles facing Norfolk and offer ideas for facing these challenges, including the new textile recycling bins at the transfer station. For details and to register for this event, go to norfolkfoundation.net/hub-events.
Celebration of Battell Fountain
The restoration of the 133-year-old Battell Fountain is complete. On Sunday, June 12, at 2 p.m. on the village green, enjoy an old-fashioned band concert and complimentary ice cream while you get a close-up look at the fountain’s amazing craftsmanship. See its clever multiple functions in action as a horse, dogs and humans all quench their thirst. Sponsored by the Norfolk Community Association and National Iron Bank.
Pet Parade
The Norfolk Library kicks off Friday Nights on the Green with a pet parade from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 17. Prizes will be awarded for best pet and best costume, and judges this year include State Representative Maria Horn and new Hub manager Jen Pfaltz. Summer Reading and Steel Drums
The Norfolk Library 2022 summer reading program Oceans of Possibilities will kick off on Saturday, June 18, at 5 p.m. with the steel drum band Caribbean Vibe. Wear island attire if you wish and plan to picnic on the lawn. Special events are planned for Mondays at 5:30 p.m. Please register your child by calling 860-542-5075, ext. 2.
Better Solutions Sampling Saturday: Laundry Pods
This summer the Norfolk Hub is hosting a series of sessions highlighting an eco-friendly household item packaged without plastics. On Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., stop by the Hub to receive a sample of laundry pods to try at home and be entered in a raffle. Juneteenth
The Norfolk Library invites you to attend a book discussion of “On Juneteenth,” by Annette Gordon-Reed on Monday, June 20, at 7 p.m. Copies of the book are free to anyone who would like to participate in the discussion. Norfolk Garden Tour
“Flora to Feast,” a tour of five Norfolk-area gardens, followed by a silent auction of garden-related items and a barbeque dinner, will take place Saturday, June 25. The event is sponsored by the Norfolk Curling Club, and proceeds will benefit the club’s promotion of the sport. Tickets are available on the club’s website and will be sold at the club on the day. The garden tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the dinner and silent auction start at 6 p.m. at the club. (See ad on p. xx.)

Open Studio Day at the Yale Norfolk School of Art is June 26, from 1:30 to 6 p.m.
Barlow Memorial Service
There will be a memorial service to celebrate the lives of Jack and Betty Barlow at the Norfolk Center Cemetery, 15 Old Colony Road, on Friday, July 1, at 1:30 p.m. All their friends and family members are invited to attend.
