Budget Approved at Annual Town Meeting
On May 9 the town held its annual meeting and approved the budget for the fiscal year beginning on July 1. First Selectman Matt Riiska said taxes will increase by 3.5 percent.
The budget had been approved by the Board of Finance at a town budget meeting on April 26. The tax increase is slightly less than the budget increase of 4 percent owing to an increase in the assessed value of the grand list.
One of the resolutions approved at the meeting was a requirement to maintain the town’s positive fund balance at no less than 15 percent of the budget. Most Connecticut towns maintain a positive fund balance to provide a safety net for emergencies.
Town residents also approved a resolution authorizing spending $110,000 for a Ford F600 plow truck and $120,000 to convert the current fire department tanker truck into a plow truck.
