It’s Here! Weekend in Norfolk

Weekend in Norfolk is next weekend! Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5, 6 and 7 mark the return of full in-person activities and fun for Norfolk’s own seventh (really) annual summer festival. Fire-hose water soccer, refreshments on the green, music and art shows, a magician, Family Night and a movie, a town-wide tag sale and so much more! Listen to the Loons

The annual Ted Byers Conservation Lecture at Doolittle Lake will take place outdoors at the Doolittle Clubhouse on Aug.13th at 4 p.m., featuring Bethany Sheffer, Sharon Audubon Naturalist and Volunteer Coordinator, talking about “Loons.” Having grown up in Northern Michigan, Bethany’s favorite species is the Common Loon and she knows a lot about them. Please come and learn more about their life cycles, mating habits, and other characteristics, etc.  A simple reception follows. Free and open to the public.

Rosemary Gill Monologue

All are welcome at the Church of Christ Congregational, on Sunday, Aug. 7 at 4:30 p.m. for Rosemary Gill’s original monologue, “Bless me Father, For I Have Sinned”. Join us at the white church on Village Green for the performance followed by refreshments outside. Donations are welcome to benefit the “Raise the Steeple” campaign. 

Hula Hoops on the Village Green

Be sure to join us on Friday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. for a fun evening hula hooping on Village Green. Brought to you by the Norfolk Library, this program is geared toward all ages and is part of the Friday Nights on the Green series. Hula hoops will be provided for use during the program.

Brad Robinson’s Soaring Sculptures

Brad Robinson returns to the Norfolk Library with a stunning display of mobiles. Influenced by the work of Alexander Calder and Asian art, he creates mobiles with a minimum of lines, relying on movement and the viewer’s eye to complete the image. Please join us for the opening reception on Sunday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by the Library Associates. 

Mindfulness with Miranda Lee at the Library

The Mindfulness series continues Friday mornings at 9 a.m. in August. All are welcome to join at any time. Miranda Lee teaches participants how to live a more mindful life and equips them with the tools they need to help build resilience against the challenges of day-to-day life. Some gentle movement (no special clothing or equipment required) is incorporated into the course. A Summer of TED Talks via Zoom

Join the library for a summer discussion series of the “Top 10 TED Talks That’ll Change Your Life.” Watch a selected TED Talk ahead of time and then meet virtually through Zoom on Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. to discuss. Attend as your summer schedule and interest allows. The discussion group runs through Sept. 19 (no meeting on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5). Books & Boots 

Read Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy , then lace up your hiking boots as we hit the Stoney Lonesome Trail on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 4:30 p.m. Meet Kelly Kandra Hughes at the trailhead on Ashpohtag Road. Bring water and insect repellent. All hiking abilities welcome. Rain date will be Sept. 11. This Norfolk Library program is in partnership with the Norfolk Land Trust. Annual Norfolk Library Book Sale

The annual book sale is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28, with free books Sunday after 2 p.m. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to browse through these amazing books, 75% of them hardcover, donated from Norfolk’s private libraries. Proceeds benefit the Norfolk Library Associates and the library’s free cultural programs they fund. The Gala Party scheduled for Friday evening, Aug. 26, has been postponed so as not to conflict with the National Iron Bank’s 75th Birthday Bash.

Better Solutions Saturdays

On Saturday, Aug. 13, stop by the Hub from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a free eco-friendly sample of Dropps brand dishwasher pods.  The Better Solutions series is sponsored by National Iron Bank.  For more information, contact jenp@norfolkfoundation.net

Small Batch, Big Flavor

On Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., stop in at Norfolk Hub for Saving the Season:  A Cook’s Guide to Canning, Picking, and Preserving. Kevin West will give a talk to encourage anyone and everyone to take up small-batch preserving.  Saving the season takes less time and effort than you think.  If you can get dinner on the table, then you have all the skills you need to make small-batch preserves and pickles. Taichi Chuan

Beginning Taichi Chuan class with Christopher Kiely has restarted at Battell Chapel on Fridays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. All are welcome to join. The first class is free for new students or $25 per class to benefit the Church of Christ Congregational. 

Women’s Self-Defense Workshop

A Women’s Self-Defense Workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Battell Chapel of the Church of Christ Congregational.
