Things Like This Don’t Happen in Norfolk – Or Do They

Selectman’s Corner

By Matt Riiska

Summer is here and so are kids on bicycles, walkers and unfortunately speeders. Please slow down. The next time you think you need to get to somewhere in a hurry, slow down and think about others who are on the roads. We have finally received more moveable speed bumps that we will be installing. Like everything this year, supply chain issues have affected us all.

We all think that by living in a rural community we are sheltered from crime and especially from assault. Recently we were all shocked by what can only be described as a horrific act in South Norfolk. Our thoughts our with the individual who was assaulted and although one is never free from the memory, we hope for their speedy recovery. But thoughts and well wishes are not good enough.

Because we are a rural community, police presence is minimal. We need to start the discussion regarding the need for a resident state trooper. This is not an inexpensive proposition and only provides for a limited number of hours per week. But what it does do is show that we have an individual who will have a presence and can address issues that would normally get documented and filed with little investigation. As we collect information on this, we will all need to take precautions. When you go out for a walk, take a friend, let someone know your route and be aware of your surroundings. By walking with a friend, the walk will go quicker and three is usually safety in numbers. During a recent Lions Club meeting, Adair Mali spoke about the work she is doing planning a one-day self-defense class for women. This event is planned for Saturday, September 10. More information on this will be provided soon.

One last topic, I would like to discuss is our need for volunteers. We have numerous positions open on several boards, commissions, and committees. Your participation would be greatly appreciated. Most organizations meet once a month, some as few times as twice a year. We all need to do our part to keep our community going. The gratification you will get outweighs the time you put in. If you are interested, please call the Selectmen’s Office. Thanks.

Take care, stay healthy, slow down and be safe.
