Margaret O’Malley, 1940-2002

Margaret Parlin Hutchinson O’Malley, 82, of Burt Lake, Mich., died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Jan. 20, 1940, to John Andrew Parlin and Agnes Tietig Parlin. Margaret was an intellect with boundless curiosity and competence in a variety of interests, especially Wordle competitions with her grandchildren Carly and Hunter. She graduated from Hillsdale (now The Seven Hills School) in 1957, Bryn Mawr College in 1961 with a BS in chemistry, followed by an MBA from Villanova University in 1989.

Her volunteerism in Philadelphia, Norfolk, and northern Michigan brought her great joy. Her professional success in higher education and later environmental remediation resulted in a remarkable legacy. She prioritized “emotional inheritance,” as evidenced by her family devotion and the friendships she treasured.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Patrick O’Malley, her son Daniel Lovett Hutchinson, and her parents.

She is survived by her daughter Agnes “Nina” Alexina Hutchinson Pruitt (husband Matthew Todd Pruitt) of North Wales, Penn., and grandchildren Matthew Hunter Pruitt of North Wales and Carly Anne Pruitt of Boston; her daughter-in-law Olivia Zanft Hutchinson of New York City, and grandchildren William Spencer Hutchinson, Alexander Lovett Hutchinson, Charlotte Anna Hutchinson, Victoria Helena Hutchinson and Madeleine Elizabeth Hutchinson, all of New York City; and two brothers, John Andrew Parlin III and David Tietig Parlin, both of Cincinnati, and their families.

A celebration of life is anticipated for next summer at Burt Lake.
