Sweet Sounds

July 20 was a big day for Norfolk’s Church of Christ Congregational. The new steeple clock face was revealed, the clock is keeping correct time and the hour bell is striking. It has been many years since this sound was last heard. According to Marie Civco, co-chair of the church’s steeple restoration committee, the clock is original to the 1813 construction of the building. It was designed by Thomas Robbins, son of Rev. Ammi Robbins, the church’s first pastor.
For the restoration, says Civco, a completely new clock face was crafted, and the interior workings of the clock were upgraded and digitized. As a final flourish, all the numerals and hands were freshly gold leafed. Once the steeple is replaced, the chimes will be reconnected and will once again play the tune that was composed by Robbins Battell for his beloved church and town.
