Tips for a Safe, Active Summer
Walkers
- Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
- Look for traffic both ways when crossing roads, even in assigned crosswalks.
- Avoid distractions while walking, like looking at your phone or listening to earbuds at high volume.
- Be visible, wear bright or reflective clothing when walking near dusk or at night.
Bicyclists
- Always ride on the right, with the flow of traffic.
- Obey all traffic rules; bicycles are considered vehicles and must follow the same rules as cars.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Use hand signals to indicate your intentions to turn, slow down, stop, etc. to other bikers, drivers, or pedestrians.
- Maintain a safe and consistent lane position, as far right as reasonable.
- Avoid riding two abreast on busy roads.
Drivers
- Be mindful and respectful of other users on the roads—pedestrians, motorcyclists, bicyclists—and consider the effect of your presence on them. They have as much right to the road as cars, but they are at a disadvantage in terms of speed
and size. - Leave appropriate distance when overtaking pedestrians or bicyclists: three feet is mandated by law in Conn., and four in Mass.
- When overtaking, pass at a reasonable speed.
- If there is oncoming traffic, do not pass three abreast with a bicyclist or walker; wait until the oncoming traffic has passed.
- Avoid honking your horn loudly when approaching walkers or
riders; sudden loud noises may startle them and cause unpredictable behavior.
