Scouting the Past

Norfolk resident Daniel Moran, a junior at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, identified a practical project as one of the requirements of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout: Assembling a team from Boy Scout Troop 22 to spruce up the older section of St. Mary’s Cemetery on North Street. Working under the guidance of Richard Byrne, Moran and his fellow scouts (assisted by Scout leaders and parents wielding chain saws) cleared downed trees, pruned encroaching growth that was overtaking some graves, and began to level leaning or toppling head stones. Moran can be seen slipping gravel under a head stone to make it more level while coached by Byrne, who also showed scouts how to use a plumb line and dowsing rods to find the location of a coffin. Moran organized the scouts, drawn from Falls Village, Lakeville and Canaan, for three work days with the last planned for Oct. 5. A member of the Norfolk Curling Club, he is interested in engineering and mechanics but also plays golf as a member of the varsity team.
