New Firehouse Vote Set for Oct. 6

The Board of Selectmen have called a special town meeting for Monday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Botelle School Hall of Flags to increase the appropriation and borrowing limits for the town’s proposed new firehouse.

Voters will be asked to approve a $10.4 million appropriation—up from the $9.3 million approved earlier in the year—and to increase the amount the town can borrow by $500,000 to $4 million. First Selectman Matt Riiska and Selectman Henry Tirrell approved the resolution and call to meeting at a special meeting on Friday, Sept. 26. Sandy Evans, the third member of the board, was out of town.

Riiska is still working with the town’s construction management consultants to lower the price tag for the structure, noting that roughly $440,000 in additional savings would be reviewed with the Firehouse Committee at its Sept. 30 meeting. He described the numbers as a “moving target.” In addition to borrowing, the town would fund construction through a combination of state and federal grants, reserves and roughly $3.2 million in commitments from private donors. This total includes a $500,000 contribution from The Norfolk Hub (See story on page 1.)
