Behind the Scenes on Route 44

The view from Norfolk’s Center Cemetery provides a good vantage point for the ongoing construction of the new retaining walls along Route 44. The so-called H piles, which can reach upwards of 50 feet, are in place and welders are working to install the studs that will be used to connect to the concrete face of the wall itself. Visible in this photo are the soil nails that tie back into the hillside, layers of flow fill concrete and the cross bars or walers. Project engineer Amy Hare of Connecticut’s Department of Transportation said observers can expect the team from K2 Infrastructure to continue building up the layers of concrete to the level of the soil nails. After that, workers will build a temporary road across the back of the wall so that it can be backfilled with dirt. At some point in November, concrete crews will arrive to start forming the front of the wall and that work will continue through the winter. “Being able to see this work at eye level or from above is a pretty special phenomenon,” said Hare, noting that the project is on schedule for completion by September 2026.
