Behind the Scenes on Election Night

The Norfolk town elections lacked suspense this year—only one seat on the Board of Education was contested—but the mechanics of administering Election Day on Nov. 6 and tallying the count followed the same, precise order under the watchful eye of Moderator Charlene Jacobs of Winsted. The role of moderator can be filled by a Norfolk resident or a trained person from another community and that person ensures that regulations are followed throughout the day. Forty-one percent (478) of Norfolk’s 1,163 registered voters participated in the election. Henry Tirrell, running for first selectman, and Chelsea DeWitt, running for re-election as treasurer, were the top vote-getters, each receiving 402 votes. Vote tallies for individual candidates trailed off after that. Jacobs, who worked closely with Danese Perron (registrar of voters) and Paul Madore (assistant registrar), is pictured reading out the results shortly after 8 p.m. Selectman candidate Leo F. Colwell Jr. is at left and Perron
