Centennial Finery on Display
The Norfolk Historical Society is kicking off the 250th anniversary year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a small exhibition, “The Romance of Worth: The Eldridge Sisters and the Centennial.” Isabella and Alice Eldridge were in their mid 20’s during the nation’s centennial celebration in 1876, and attended the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, a year after their European tour. Each owned a gown from the renowned atelier, The House of Worth, Paris, and those are being shown for the first time. The exhibition opens Feb. 14 with a member’s reception and will be open on the following two February weekends with a gallery talk on Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
