Winter in the IceBox

By Henry Tirrell

As you know, it has been a classic New England winter here in the Icebox. It’s been a few years since we have had cold and snow sustained for this long. While it is at times challenging, it can also be beautiful. i hope you can enjoy it.

I want to thank everyone for your help and patience as our town and state crews clear the roads. A special thanks to those people who have been doing the cleanup. They have been working too many weekends, holidays, and nights as the snow, sleet, and every other mix have fallen.

Some site work for the new firehouse has been completed. Here’s hoping that the temperatures soon rise above the single digits to make it easier for footings and slab to be poured.

Aside from the firehouse—and the ongoing state project to rebuild the retaining wall on Route 44—we are all about bridges here in town. next up is construction of the new Mountain Road bridge over Spaulding Brook. It is located just past the ballfield at the intersection with Westside Road and will begin this spring. Luckily for Norfolk, the costs will be fully reimbursed through the state and federal bridge program.

The Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance will be working on putting together a budget over the next two months for presentation at the annual town meeting this spring. That seems far away, but for those who have to clean up all this snow, it surely can’t come soon enough.
