Pro Tip? Ask Jim for Help

The sign behind Jim Powelzyk at Norfolk’s transfer station says it all: If you don’t know where to put something or can’t tell the difference between household waste and bulky waste, ask the expert. There is a place for everything, and it matters that waste in all its permutations goes where it belongs. Otherwise, Powelzyk gets a call from the operator of the Torrington transfer station with an inventory of disposal no-no’s committed by Norfolk residents. They are not fun. Make Powelzyk’s life easier and check before you chuck something into a dumpster. Lightbulbs, batteries, mattresses, electronics and textiles all have their designated spots. Scrap metal also has a home and needs to be free of glass. Cans and bottles that carry a deposit are redeemed to benefit Norfolk charities – put them in the appropriate barrel, so the Swap Shop’s Susan Sloan doesn’t have to fish them out of a dumpster. The good stuff can go to the Swap Shop where it might just find a happy home. Right now, transfer station stickers are available at half price ($50 for the first sticker) from Town Clerk Debbie Nelson. They will be good until June 30. Full-year stickers will become available in June.
