The somewhat lopsided Japanese Zelkova tree that once stood near the entrance to Nor-folk’s Post Office on Station Place is no more. Likely planted some 30 years ago during Ar-thur Rosenblatt’s tenure as first selectman, the hardy tree fell victim to progress and the need to replace the adjacent sidewalk. The planned removal of the tree was the sub-ject of a spirited email campaign and then an Aug. 17 public meeting presided over by Tree Warden Matt Klimkosky. According to a report in the town’s weekly newsletter, an informal poll among the attendees was even-ly divided between saving the tree, a popu-lar substitute for the beloved American Elm, and cutting it down. In the end, Klimkosky concluded it was too damaged to survive. Meanwhile First Selectman Henry Tirrell is looking to convene a “tree committee” to keep on eye on Norfolk’s trees, particularly some of the struggling specimens on the Vil-lage Green.
