There is another name missing from the town’s Civil War monument. He is Lawrence Ryan, age 28, killed at Antietam in 1862 and buried in the Catholic cemetery.

I am writing from Richmond, Virginia to inform the good people of Norfolk that your Civil War monument is missing at least one name, and perhaps many more! The missing name is Col. George Ryan, who was profiled in Theron Crissey’s book History of Norfolk.
George was my great, great, great uncle, the American-born Catholic son of Irish immigrants John and Joanna Ryan. He lived most of his life in Norfolk before attending West Point. George was killed on May 8, 1864 at Spotsylvania, Virginia.

      Susan:
That is extremely interesting. I will pass this on to our town historian, Ann Havemeyer, who has just curated a show at the Norfolk Historical Museum on the Irish influx to Norfolk in the nineteenth century. I don’t know what we can do about making our Civil War monument more complete, but I can certainly look into it.
      Best, Wiley Wood

Thank you. Perhaps a good place to start would be to add George’s name to a roll call of the dead during Memorial Day ceremonies 2015.
