Haystack Quilters

Under the instruction of fabric artist Shirley Metcalf, third from left above, the Haystack quilters use the latest technology and equipment. Scissors have been replaced by a rotary cutter, which can slice through four layers of fabric at a time. The quilting proper is performed by a long-arm, free-standing quilting machine. Fabric has been donated, and the finished quilts will go to the Susan B. Anthony Project, a women’s shelter. The group, which includes, from left, Phyllis Diggle, Leslie Battis, Ms. Metcalf, Lisa MItchel, Angela Hutchins, Ashley Allyn, Melissa Robinson, Adair Mali and Linda Deloy, meets Tuesday evenings through the winter in the dining room of the Battell Chapel.
