Botelle Students Honor Veterans

While many schools around the country enjoyed a day off, Botelle School presented a ninety-minute Veteran’s Day assembly on November 11, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The veterans’ arrival was marked by a row of flags along the upper parking lot. A range of school staff and volunteers under the direction of head custodian Mr. Leo Colwell greeted the veterans and ensured that everyone arrived safely.

The program was held in the school gymnasium. Highlights included a range of songs performed by the chorus under the direction of Mrs. Allyn and the band under the direction of Ms. Bianchi. Popular numbers included the band’s rendition of “America the Beautiful” and the chorus’s medley of music entitled, “A Tribute to the Armed Services.” A song from each branch of the service was represented, including “Anchors Aweigh” and “The U.S. Air Force,” also informally known as “Wild Blue Yonder.”

Each classroom also prepared a presentation for the assembly. Mrs. Tallon’s kindergarten, for instance, performed, “Three Cheers for Our Veterans,” and Mrs. deRoode’s third grade performed, “It’s a Small World.” A group of fifth- and sixth-grade students set a “Remembrance Table,” whose elements they explained. The table included items like a plate sprinkled with salt, symbolizing the tears shed by families kept apart by war, and a white tablecloth in honor of the devoted hearts of the soldiers as they go off to serve. A white candle was lit, for peace.

Botelle School Principal Mr. O’Connell and Superintendent Dr. Iacobelli made brief speeches in honor of the occasion. Mr. Richard Byrne followed and introduced the more than 50 veterans who attended. Each veteran announced his or her branch of the military, area of specialization and years served. Many provided a quick story or saying from the military, along with a word of thanks to the students and staff.

After the assembly, the PTO provided a buffet lunch in the Botelle School Hall of Flags. Veterans and their families connected and shared stories, with many lingering until after 1:00 PM to enjoy coffee and dessert.
