GMF Lecture
Come hear Researcher Robert E. Marra, Ph.D. of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station discuss how he uses tomography in his tree research at Great Mountain Forest to assess the extent of internal decay in northern hardwoods, and how that affects our understanding of the role that forests play in combatting climate change. Lecture is at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 7 at the Douglas Library in North Canaan, followed by a wine and cheese reception. Registration required. Winter Ecology Hike to Camp’s Pond
Jay Aylward from UMass Amherst will lead a winter hike to Camp’s Pond on Saturday, February 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aylward, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in environmental conservation and teaching an undergraduate plant identification class, has a real passion for winter bud and twig identification. The hope is to go to the pond on snowshoes, but we will hike instead if there isn’t adequate snow cover. Meet at the Childs Center, 200 Canaan Mountain Rd. in Falls Village. Land Trust’s Annual Meeting
The Land Trust’s annual meeting will be held at the library on Sunday, February 15 at 4 p.m. A turtle presentation by turtle expert and rehabilitator Linda Gould will immediately follow. Gould has a turtle barn on her property in Pawling, New York where she cares for a total of 47 turtles and tortoises representing 14 different species. She will bring along some of her turtles, including a large sulcata tortoise. The public is welcome to attend.
Land Trust’s Winter Adventure

Land Trust Winter Adventure
Join the land trust for a winter adventure on Saturday, February 21 at Dennis Hill State Park. Park at the entrance on Route 272 South at 1 p.m. and then ski, snowshoe or hike up to the gazebo for hot chocolate and s’mores. Bad weather date is Saturday, February 28. Blues/Folk Band at the Library
Blues and gospel collide with kitchen-party fiddle riffs and crystal clear vocals in the music of The Stacks. Come tap your feet on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. as singer-songwriter-guitarist Andy Stack and Grammy-winning fiddler Tania Elizabeth and their Americana band fill the library’s Great Hall with music that is described as an intoxicating blend of old and new, and the fiddle playing as nothing short of mind-blowing. This event is free. For reservations, call 860-542-5075.

Scholarships Available
Students who are residents of Barkhamsted, Colebrook, Hartland, New Hartford, Norfolk and Winchester are eligible to receive a Greenwoods Scholarship. High school graduates and those already matriculated in a college or university may also apply. Application forms and instructions may be obtained online at www.gsfct.org. The deadline for submission is February 27.

Chili Cook-Off
It will be getting hot at the Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, February 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Klauer Hall. Enter as an applicant or just come and taste delicious chilies. The cost is $5 per person or $10 per family. Applications to enter the cook-off and win fabulous prizes may be obtained from Sally O’Brien, 860-542-6035. The event is sponsored by the Immaculate Conception Church Women’s Club.
