Edible Plant Workshop at GMF
Join environmental educator Barbara Austin at the Childs Center from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 3 for an edible wild plants workshop. The workshop includes food preparation and sampling the edibles.
Susan Rand Exhibition
Salisbury resident Susan Rand returns to the library in October with a new exhibition of recent work reflecting the local scenery. An opening reception will take place on Sunday, October 4 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Library Story Hours
The library’s story hours for children will begin the week of October 5 and run for ten weeks. Kindergarten Kids Story Hour is on Monday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. (snack provided), Pre-K Kids Story Hour is on Tuesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (bring a bag lunch) and Story Hour for Three-Year-Olds is on Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. (parents are asked to stay in the library). Pre-registration is required, and bus passes are necessary for Botelle students. Questions can be directed to efitzgibbons@biblio.org, or by calling Eileen at 860-542-6075.
Mini Yoga Retreat
“Building Your Inner Resources: Coming Home,” a mini yoga retreat with guest instructor Brahmani Liebman will be held in the chapel at the Church of Christ Congregational on Friday, October 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Liebman is a Kripalu Yoga Teacher Trainer, Transcendental Reiki Master and a lifelong student of living a life with wisdom and compassion. Please register at cchurch01@snet.net. There is a $35 fee for this workshop.
Celtic Music Concert
Come hear instrumental trio, “The Press Gang,” on Friday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the library. The trio features Chris “Junior” Stevens on concertina and button accordion, Alden Robinson on fiddle and Owen Marshall on bouzouki, guitar and harmonium. The group tours widely in the northeast and is known for their humorous stage presence as well as their musicianship. This concert is free, and reservations are requested.
Nature Journaling for Kids
Children aged 8 and over are invited to join Great Mountain Forest staff members for a hike up Canaan Mountain on Saturday, October 17 at 9 a.m. Participants will sketch the incredible view and head back to the Childs Center to write about their experience. The event ends at noon.
Stone Carver Talk
Sculptor Adam Heller will talk about the craft of hand-carved stone sculpture, brush lettering and design on Sunday, October 18 at 4 p.m. Heller owns and operates a fine arts studio in town. His lettering and design can be found on memorials throughout the world.
Author Talk
Cynthia Wolfe Boynton, author of “Connecticut Witch Trials: The First Panic in the New World,” will uncover the dark history of Connecticut’s 17th century witch trials at the library on Sunday, October 25 at 4 p.m. A little known fact, Connecticut’s witch hunt was the first and most ferocious in New England, and occurred almost 50 years before the infamous Salem witch trials.
Bootelle Spooktacular
The annual Halloween party at Botelle School will take place on Friday, October 30 from – to – p.m.
Halloween Night Trick or Treating
The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department will monitor and slow traffic on Maple Avenue between 5 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 31 for safe Trick or Treating. Donations of bags of candy can be dropped off at the National Iron Bank, the library and Botelle School. If you live on Maple Avenue, Emerson Street or Terrace View and would like to receive candy donations, please sign up at the library.
