Remembering Richard W. MacPherson

Richard W. MacPherson, 88, of Freeport, Me., and formerly Norfolk, Conn., died on October 22, 2015 at his residence in Freeport with his family by his side.

He was predeceased in 2009 by his wife of 54 years, Marie Humphrey MacPherson.

Richard was born in Bridgewater, Mass. on April 19, 1927, a son of Henry B. and Grace L. (Wiggin) MacPherson. The family moved to northwestern Connecticut when Richard was in middle school. He graduated from The Gilbert School, Winsted, Conn., and Bentley College. He served in the Navy in World War II and was also a 32nd Degree Mason.

He retired in 1987 as Senior Vice President and Treasurer of SCASCO, a Petroleum Distributor in Winsted. During his years with the company, he was active in many civic organizations in the Winsted and Norfolk area, including past director of Winsted Memorial Hospital and Winsted Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of Norfolk Board of Education, past treasurer of the Norfolk Curling Club and member of the Norfolk Country Club.

Richard and his wife refurbished an old colonial on Doolittle Drive in Norfolk soon after they were married, living there for many years, raising their children and reviving the old farm to accommodate horses. They later moved to Bruey Road until relocating to Maine after retirement.

During his retirement, he was a constant volunteer driver for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Meals on Wheels Program.

Mr. MacPherson is survived by his son, Richard H. MacPherson of Portland, Me; his daughter, Mandana MacPherson and her husband Cameron Trotter and his grandson, Aidan S. Trotter of Freeport, Me. He is also survived by a niece, Patricia MacPherson McCusker of Kentucky and a nephew Bruce R. MacPherson of Hawaii; his brother and sister-in-law Fred and Marsha Humphrey of Winsted, CT.

A graveside service was held on Nov 1, 2015 at Forest View Cemetery in Winsted.
