Concert and Songwriting Workshop at the Norfolk Library
Ed Snodderly, a Southern music legend, will perform on Saturday, April 2 at Norfolk Library with a noon to 2 p.m. workshop and 7:30 p.m. concert. Born in East Tennessee, Ed is a songwriter, actor, and musician who played in the critically-acclaimed duo The Brother Boys. He will offer a free songwriting workshop (pre-registration required, limited to 12) and a concert in the evening. The concert is free, and reservations are strongly encouraged, 860-542-5075.
Documentary Film at the Norfolk Library
Oscar-nominated director Markus Imhoof will tackle the vexing issue of why bees, worldwide, are facing extinction, with a free showing of his film, More Than Honey, at Norfolk Library on Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m. With all the hallmarks of a great nature documentary, the film employs the latest in cinematic technology to observe phenomena undetectable by normal eyesight, beautifully portraying the dramatic story of the disappearance of millions of bees in the last decade. The film is an unprecedented global examination of endangered honeybees spanning from California to Switzerland, China and Australia.
Open House at Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department
On Saturday, April 9, the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department will be participating in National Volunteer Week by opening the doors to its fire house located at 20 Shepard Road from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors to the fire house will be able to talk with volunteer firefighters about the work they do, explore fire apparatus and turnout gear, get a tour of the fire house, and fill out an application. Two Afternoons of Poetry at the Norfolk Library
In recognition of National Poetry Month, the Norfolk Library will host two afternoons of poetry reading. On Sunday April 10 at 4 p.m., professional singer and choral conductor Charles Fidlar will bring his wealth of musical knowledge to a recitation of Walt Whitman’s poetry, using rhythm and melodic contour to invoke the musical setting. Poets Susannah Wood and Karen Chase will read from their published works the following Sunday, April 17, at 4 p.m.
Of Forests and Birds
Join friend of Great Mountain Forest and avid birder, Michael Corcoran, when he discusses some of Connecticut’s forest bird species at Douglas Library in Canaan on Saturday, April 16 at 4 p.m. Mr. Corcoran will discuss how diversity in forest type (age, structure and composition) create “ecological niches” which support a dizzying array of songbird species in our small state. Come help us celebrate the arrival of spring, the spectacle of bird migration and time spent in the great outdoors! Open House Tour of Samuel Rockwell House
The Colebrook Historical Society is pleased to announce an Open House Tour of the historic Samuel Rockwell House on Sunday, April 17. This year marks the home’s 250th birthday. Rockwell served as a militia captain in the American Revolution. On Dec 13, 1779, he hosted the first meeting in Colebrook “to start business as a body politic” in this home. For nearly 30 years this house was the principal meeting place for conducting the business of the town and the church. The house has been painstakingly restored by its present caretakers, Mark and Susan Caufield, making this a rare opportunity to stroll through history. A reception with refreshments will follow the tour. The event begins at 3 p.m.
Regional 7 Budget Hearing
Don’t miss your chance to learn about the budget proposed by the Northwestern Regional 7 Board of Education for the 2016-17 school year. A hearing will be held on April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater at the high school, located at 100 Battistoni Drive in Winsted. This is the time to go and find answers to your questions.
Spring Trail Work Day
Please join us at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23 in front of the Land Trust Office at 10 Station Place for our Spring Trail Work Day. Please wear shoes and clothes for the weather and bring work gloves. Presidential Preference Primaries
Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday, April 26, to help choose the next occupant of the White House. Presidential Preference Primaries will be held for members of the Republican and Democratic parties at Norfolk Town Hall, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The last day for voters to change political parties is April 21, with an exception for in-person changes. Author Talk at the Norfolk Library
How far would you go to save a dog’s life? Rescue Road, a New York Times best seller is the extraordinary story of one man who has driven more than a million miles to rescue thousands of dogs from hunger, abuse, and neglect and give them a second chance at life. On Saturday, April 30 at 5 p.m., journalist Peter Zheutlin will speak at the Norfolk Library about his travels with Greg Mahle on his Rescue Road Trips to bring hard-luck dogs from the deep South to loving families with the help of many selfless volunteers along the way.
Finding Your Ancestors
The Catholic Women’s Club will host a presentation on finding your ancestors by Laurie-Faulke-Green, Family Researcher, in Klauer Hall on May 10, 2016 at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

On August 5, 6, and 7, come celebrate Norfolk’s many natural and cultural offerings. Taconic Learning Center Spring Courses
The Taconic Learning Center (TLC) is a non-profit membership organization providing the opportunity for lifelong learning to area residents. TLC’s courses cover a wide variety of academic subjects, taught by volunteers who are all experts in their fields, with courses such as The Civil War in Fiction and Creation of the Modern Middle East, just to name two. There are no registration fees for attending TLC classes but a tax-deductible donation of sixty ($60) dollars makes it possible for Taconic Learning Center to meet its ongoing expenses. Third Annual Norfolk Car Show
Save the Date! The Third Annual Norfolk Car Show has a new venue! It will be held at the Yale Music Shed grounds on Saturday, September 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. due to the huge popularity and continued growth of the show. The Shed grounds will allow for more cars, food vendors and fundraising booths, so be sure to register as soon as the forms go out in May.
