Norfolk Bids Farewell to Evan G. Hughes

Evan G. Hughes, who, with Peter Ermacora, his late partner and spouse of 42 years, was a long-time resident of Norfolk, died on March 9, 2016 at Kindred Hospital of the Palm Beaches, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Evan had moved to Jupiter, Florida two years ago. His spiritual home, though, was Norfolk, and he fully expected and looked forward to returning here often. Evan was born in Columbus, Ohio in May of 1943, son of the late Dr. George K. Hughes and Kathleen (Powers) Hughes. He graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. Later, he and Peter opened EGHPeter, Inc., a business in New York City and later in Norfolk, featuring 18th and 19th century antiques, and for a time operated a related shop featuring flowers as well as antiques in New York.

Evan cared greatly about Norfolk and worked tirelessly for the Norfolk Library and Norfolk Music Festival, making their special events beautiful and memorable and together with Peter “produced” many Norfolk weddings over the years. He also served as vestryman at Christ Church, Episcopal in Canaan.

Evan leaves his sister, Martha and brother-in-law, Tony Scavongelli; his nephew, Andrew J. Scavongelli; and great nephew, Lucian Scavongelli, all of Barrington, R.I.

Interment will be in Columbus, Ohio. A memorial service will be held early this summer in Norfolk, Conn.

Donations in Evan’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St., I-91 Technology Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067. For online condolences visit www.taylorandmodeen.com
