Art Exhibition
WaterWorks, a watercolor art school and gallery located on the second floor of the National Iron Bank building, will host free painting demonstrations, art classes for children and adults, a lecture and a weekend-long exhibition of nature-based watercolor paintings by regional artists on August 5, 6, and 7, culminating with an awards ceremony and closing party at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 7. Tickets to the Democratic Town Committee Picnic
The Norfolk Democratic Town Committee will be at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. selling tickets to the “Meet the Candidates” picnic that will be held on September 10. Tickets are $15. Candidates Bill Riiska and David Pena will be on hand at our farmer’s market booth to answer questions. Riiska, of Salisbury, is running for the 64th Assembly District state representative seat vacated by Roberta Willis. Pena, an Avon town councilman, is running for the 8th Senate District. Classic Car Show Planning Session
A planning session for the Fourth Annual Classic Community Classic Car Show will be held on Monday, August 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lions Club Ambulance Building. If you are interested in helping out with this year’s event, which will take place on Saturday, September 17 at the Yale Music Shed parking area, please attend this meeting, or contact Marie Lowe at marie@mi-ms.com.
A Taste of the Balkans
On Friday, August 12, at 7 p.m., the Colebrook Historical Society will host a social gathering with refreshments and lively conversation. Highlighting the evening will be a presentation by Babs Perkins, whose photography and writing focuses on cultural documentation and preservation. Perkins will talk about her ongoing travels in Bosnia and Serbia, and share her images along with fascinating stories of the people, places and products she’s discovered. The gathering will be held at the historic Seymour Inn on the corner of Routes 183 and 182A in the center of Colebrook. Ice Cream Social
The Colebrook Historical Society invites you to an old fashioned Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the historic Rock School. Colebrook residents Ken Andresen and Mike Carroll will be playing and singing traditional favorites, and all are invited to sing along. There will also be a variety of historical toys and games on display. Take advantage of an opportunity to tour the only one room schoolhouse in Connecticut that has never been modernized in any way. Historical Society Walking Tour
Meet at the museum at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 for a guided walking tour focusing on the stained glass, metal, stone, wood and terra cotta features in Norfolk’s town center. This tour complements the museum’s 2016 exhibition “Hidden in Plain Sight: Artists, Artisans and Craftsmen of Norfolk’s Golden Age of Architecture.
Book Sale at the Library
The 40th Annual Norfolk Library Book Sale will take place on Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to browse through over 10,000 books donated from Norfolk’s private libraries, 75 percent of them hardcover. Proceeds benefit the Norfolk Library Associates and support the library’s many free special events, documentary films, concerts, book discussions and children’s programs.
Classic Car Show
The Classic Community Classic Car Show, benefitting the Norfolk Lions Club Ambulance and the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department, will be held on Saturday, September 17. This year, the event will be held at the Yale Music Shed parking area to provide even more room for classic cars, vendors, food and entertainment. Admission is free. Classic car registration is $15. Land Trust Trail Race
The Norfolk Land Trust will host both a 5K- and 10K-trail race on Sunday, Sept. 25 with the start and finish for both races at the Barbour Woods’ trailhead at 75 Lovers Lane. The 10K race, new this year, begins at noon and has been named the USATF-CT Trail Championship. Runners will follow the classic 5K route for a mile and then branch off toward Haystack Mountain. Runners will ascend the mountain, loop around the tower and then descend to the park’s main entrance to finish the run through Barbour Woods. The classic 5K starts at 12:30 and features a mixture of single and double track through historic Barbour Woods.
