Regional 7 Budget Referendum

Voting on the Northwestern Regional School District No. 7 2017-2018 Budget Referendum will take place on Tuesday, May 2 from noon to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

 

Birding by Ear at Aton Forest

Learn to distinguish a variety of both breeding and migrant bird species by song and call at Aton Forest on two Saturdays in May. Bob Barbieri will lead the May 6 outing and Fran Zygmont will lead the May 20 outing. Both birding experiences run from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. May is a great time to spot birds, as the trees and shrubs are not yet fully leafed out, and Aton Forest offers several habitat types to ensure a wide range of bird sightings. Reservations must be made in advance of each date. Go to www.atonforest.org/workshops to register. Space is limited and there is a charge of $15 per person.

 

Performance Under the Stained Glass

The Mosaic Trio and Friends will perform on Saturday, May 6 at 5 p.m. in Battell Chapel, under the recently restored Maitland Armstrong stained glass window. The trio features Lu Sun on violin, Pat Daly Vance on viola and Peter Zay on cello. They will be joined by special guests Curt Blood on clarinet and Curtis Macomber on violin. An elegant reception will follow in the Tiffany Room. The performance is underwritten through a grant from the Battell Arts Foundation. Norfolk Land Trust’s Trail Work Day

Please join the Norfolk Land Trust at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at Robertson Plaza (across from 10 Station Place) for their Spring Trail Work Day. Please wear shoes and clothes appropriate for working outdoors, and bring work gloves. Tie Flies with Doug McDevitt

Come learn to tie flies for fishing in local streams and rivers with experienced fisherman, fly tier and teacher Doug McDevitt on Sunday, May 21. The workshop will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Great Mountain Forest’s Childs Center, 200 Canaan Mountain Road in Falls Village. The cost is $25 per person and there is a limit of 8 participants. To register, contact jean@greatmountainforest.org. All the necessary tools and materials will be provided. No experience is required.

 

Under Milk Wood at the Norfolk Library

On Sunday, May 21 at 4 p.m., the Sandisfield Players (under the direction of Ben Luxon) will perform “Under Milk Wood,” a radio play by Dylan Thomas. One of the Welsh poet’s greatest achievements, “Under Milk Wood” was written for narration on BBC radio and encompasses a day in the life of the small fictitious Welsh fishing village of Llareggub. Full of eccentric characters, the play is a work of dazzling poetry and sly and bawdy humor. Please call the library at 860-542-5075 to reserve a seat for this free program.

 

Harpsichord Concert at the Norfolk Library

On Saturday, May 27 at 5 p.m. James Kennerley will perform a program of J. S. Bach and his contemporaries on one of Carl Dudash’s beautiful harpsichords, built locally here in Norfolk. A recognized specialist in the realm of early music, Kennerley has given solo harpsichord and organ concerts throughout the United States and Europe to great acclaim. A graduate of the Historical Performance program at the Juilliard School, Kennerley is married to Norfolk resident Emily Werne, and they live in New York City, where he is organist and music director at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church. Memorial Day Festivities

The annual Memorial Day parade takes place, rain or shine, on Monday, May 29 at 9 a.m. All are welcome for coffee and doughnuts at the fire house immediately following the parade. The Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department’s 39th Annual Memorial Day Five Mile Road Race departs from Westside Road at noon and finishes at the village green. Proceeds benefit the William F. Kelley Memorial scholarship fund.

 

Democratic Town Committee Hosts Forum

The Norfolk Democratic Town Committee will sponsor a forum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at Botelle School for the two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for First Selectman. Candidates Leo Colwell and Matt Riiska will answer written questions at the event. Registered Democrats will gather at a caucus in July to select a slate for the November election.
