Brandon Leclair won the race, beating his nearest competitor by nearly two minutes.

The Memorial Day 5-Mile Road Race was run in cool, almost ideal conditions. A field of 156 runners took their positions at the starting line, ranging in age from eight to 88.

The race was won by Brandon Leclair of Goshen, 20, in a near-record time of 27:54. Leclair also won the race in 2014 and came in second in 2015.

The course record of 27:40 was set by Scott Shaw in 2016.

The second-place runner, Peter Bakker, 19, of Barkhamsted, crossed the finish line with a time of 29:48. In third place was Jeffrey Schumaker, 17, of Colebrook, followed closely by Tyler Schumacher, 11, with times of 31:41 and 31:45 respectively.

Brynn Bergin, 11, was the first female finisher.

The first female runner was Brynn Bergin, 11, of Goshen, in a time of 35:44, followed closely by Charity Smith of Avon and Teren Block of Ridgefield.

The last runner to finish the course, in a time of 1:32:59, was Edward Regner, 88, of Torrington. Mr. Regner is a regular participant in the Norfolk race.

Norfolk’s Memorial Day 5-Mile Race was run for the 39^th time on Monday. It is organized by the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department, and the proceeds are distributed as scholarships to Norfolk students.
