Norfolk Land Trust Hikes

As part Connecticut Trails Day, the NLT will offer two different hikes at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Billings trailhead on Grantville Road: a three-mile hike to the East Summit Trail and a two-mile hike to the Pine Mountain Trail. Both include a fairly steep ascent, and the trails are often wet so please wear appropriate footwear. The rain date will be Sunday, June 4. Gardening With Native Plants

Mike Nadeau will present a talk, “Using Native Plants for Naturalistic Landscapes,” on June 3 at 4 p.m. at the Norfolk Library. Sponsored by the Norfolk Conservation Commission.

 

Church of Christ Congregational Annual Silent Auction

Browse and bid on a variety of items including work by local artists; stays at local inns and vacation homes in the U.S. and abroad; meals prepared by caterers and restaurants; gift certificates from local businesses; and many, many more items. Forum for Democratic First Selectman Candidates

On Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m., the Norfolk Democratic Town Committee will sponsor a forum at Botelle School for the two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for first selectman. Candidates Leo Colwell and Matt Riiska will present their views and answer written questions from the audience. Registered Democrats will gather at a caucus in July to select a slate for the November election.

 

Field Trip to the Mark Twain House in Hartford

On Friday, June 9, the Norfolk Library is sponsoring a field trip to the Mark Twain House in Hartford. Built in 1881 and decorated by Louis C. Tiffany & Co.‚ the Mark Twain House is filled with design motifs from Morocco‚ India‚ Japan‚ China and Turkey. This trip is limited to 23 people, and advance registration is required by calling the library at 860-542-5075.

 

Ornamental Plant Exchange

The Norfolk Conservation Commission’s annual Ornamental Plant Exchange will be June 10 at the Farmers Market. Norfolk residents who take out an invasive shrub or tree on their property can bring proof of removal to the Farmers Market and pick out a lovely, free native plant to replace it.

 

CHASM: The Splendor of Voice and Percussion

A choral concert will be given on Sunday, June 11 at the Music Shed, bringing the best vocal talent from Litchfield and Berkshire Counties together with an explosive assembly of percussionists. Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus, under the direction of Gabriel Löfvall, will join with the Berkshire Children’s Chorus, under the direction of Julie Bickford, accompanied by a team of percussionists headed up by Norfolk native Andrew Thomson. New Findings on Osteoporosis

Dr. Edward Colt will give a slide talk at the Norfolk Library on Thursday, June 15 at 7:00 pm on osteoporosis. His findings show that exercise, eating well and stopping smoking are as effective as medication in preventing hip fracture. Norfolk book launch for Courtney Maum’s new novel, “Touch”

Come help Courtney Maum celebrate the release of her second novel, “Touch,” a satire about a renowned trend forecaster who longs to overturn her own predictions about technology and reclaim her human heart. After a short reading, Maum will be joined by former W Magazine editor and beauty expert, Jane Larkworthy, to talk about her decades of experience as a trend spotter, and how trends in fashion and technology affect our lives, even if we don’t consider ourselves “trendy.” Book signing to follow. Nick Halley, Jon Suters & Friends at the Norfolk Library

On Sunday, June 25, at 5:30 p.m., Nick Halley, Jon Suters and friends will get together for a summer concert that combines their vast palette of influences into one musical melting pot of decidedly fun repertoire of popular music from around the world. Jon and Nick will perform as a duo, expanding to a trio, then a quartet, and even incorporating some singers into the mix. Golf Outing

The Men’s Club of Immaculate Conception Church will host its 14th annual golf outing on Wednesday, June 28, at Quarry View Golf Course in East Canaan. The shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. A $95 fee includes: greens fee, golf cart, on-the-course refreshments and dinner afterward at Geer Village, Canaan. World War I Exhibit at Historical Society

The 2017 exhibition “Norfolk in the Great War” is on through October 9 at the Norfolk Historical Society. Featuring stories of Norfolk’s soldiers, life on the home front, and a selection of stunning World War I-era posters, the exhibition is a fascinating look at the “war to end all wars” from the perspective of our town. And save the date for our program on music of the Great War at the library on July 23.
