New Emporium on the Road to Canaan
Three ventures under one roof
By Lloyd Garrison
A gray, largely windowless 10,000 square-foot commercial structure on Route 44 in East Canaan will showcase three businesses related to home building, renovation and home improvement. The building, which resembles a warehouse, was built along the shoulder of a once hilly pasture known locally known as Rose Hill.
Two enterprises have already taken occupancy. One is Hartford-based Plimpton & Hills, which will be selling plumbing, heating, ventilating and air conditioning products. The company has outlets in Massachusetts and Duchess County in New York. This will be its first entry into Litchfield County.
The second venture is Laigle Floorcovering in Canaan, whose showroom is located only a mile away on East Main Street across from Stop and Shop. The site is familiar to many from Norfolk who once frequented Tyler Carpet, which was acquired a year ago by Ron Laigle of Cornwall. Laigle is not moving his showroom into Rose Hill but has rented 3,000 square feet for storage, shipping and receiving.
The third tenant, Rose Hill Kitchen and Bath, will be opening in the spring. It expects to concentrate on the design and building of kitchens and bathrooms, but will subcontract the installation.
