Selectman’s Corner—July 2007
By Sue Dyer
The town is looking for volunteer representatives to serve on two regional boards, the Northwestern Connecticut Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Northwest Regional Mental Health Board. If anyone is interested, please contact the Selectmen’s Office at 542-5829.
We had many volunteers that helped in erecting the sign on the Village Green. I think it looks great in its current position and hopefully will not be in the line of fire the next time a car careens around the corner. We appreciate the time and effort it took these gentlemen to have the Norfolk sign grace the Village Green once again.
Norfolk is part of an exploratory program called the Northwest Regional Planning Collaborative. Though the program is currently waiting for funding, it could be very useful to our P & Z and Inland/Wetland Commissions as they review their regulations. The intention of this collaborative is to assist our land use commissions in making sure that their regulations are exactly what they want them to be.
Household medicines should be disposed of properly. They should not be flushed down the toilet or sink. This will cause water pollution because they pass through the septic and sewage treatment plants untreated. To dispose of your medicine properly you should do the following: Keep the medication in its original container. Modify medications to discourage consumption by adding water to partially dissolved pills, and adding flour or salt to liquid medications. Seal and conceal. Tape the container shut and place it into a non-transparent item such as a yogurt container. Discard the container into your garbage. Medicines properly disposed of are burned at the Connecticut Resource and Recovery facility at very high temperatures that destroy the product and prevent the medications from getting into our land and water.
The Volunteer Fire Department is going to have a fire drill on Sunday, July 15th starting at 9:00 AM and ending at Noon. This is a beneficial training drill for our volunteers and our mutual aid volunteers as to how to attack a fire in the center of town. The Norfolk Corner Store will close at 9 AM on July 15 so that the departments can fully operate their mock drill. We ask for your patience, since this drill is important to our volunteers.
Enjoy the summer.
