Norfolk Artist Will Transform Your Home

By Michael Cobb

Ruthann Olsson has opened a tranquil showroom on John J. Curtiss Rd. in Norfolk.

Born in Michigan, Ruthann Olsson is an artist, consultant, decorator and re-designer, who has made Norfolk her home since 1971. Some of her work is visible on the decorative Turnpike Sign located on the corner of the Town Green, at Routes 44 and 272. She has maintained this historical landmark, with its painted flora and fauna, for 27 years. Olsson is a passionate designer, mixing subtle, contemporary references with the classical. A professional member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, her work has been published in House & Garden, Florida Design, Connecticut Magazine, and more locally in the Lakeville Journal and the Litchfield County Times. She has provided custom decoration to many designers, including John Saladino, Peter Marino, Thierry Despont and Kevin Hart.

Olsson is careful to distinguish herself as a re-designer and not an interior designer.  She does not sell fabrics or furniture, but provides creative services to determine a concept of styling, that suits both the architecture and needs of the client. This could include color and design consulting, custom decoration such as texture, architectural trompe l’oeil and murals. Olsson enjoys working with craftsmen, where interior construction or restoration is required.  “My role as a designer and consultant,” she says, “is to offer clients viable choices that fit their unique environment. An overall plan is essential, so I work with the client, the architect and the builder in seeing those plans through to completion.” Olsson recently celebrated the opening of a new studio and showroom on John J. Curtis Road in Norfolk, where she shared some secrets of the trade.

Where do you begin the process?

I start by finding out what people are dreaming about for their home. I look at the architecture, the existing furniture and how it relates to the space, what kind of light exists and what are their color preferences.  When choosing colors, it is important that the color flow throughout. Paint finish plays an important role, for example, playing a flat finish against gloss. Ultimately, we are looking for the “ahh” factor, the feeling that a well-put-together room gives you, which is often subtle.

Do you have a trademark color scheme?

No, every single client and space is unique.  Colors might work in one place but not another.  I don’t begin with a preconceived idea. That’s what makes collaboration fun and exciting.

What is it you like best about living and working in Norfolk?

I like everything about it.  It’s easy to travel within a 100-mile radius, but business is usually done within an hour’s distance.  There are excellent local artisans and craftsmen in Norfolk and throughout this area. I especially enjoy my beautiful new space allowing me to work in the center of town.

How do you see the future in your new studio?

I would like to be busy enough for a full time assistant. This would give me time to explore and possibly to develop a product line. But, most importantly, I look forward to the continuing pleasure of adventurous and collaborative clients.  I love it!
