Walking Tour of Norfolk’s War Memorials

In conjunction with the Norfolk Historical Society’s exhibition Norfolk in the Great War, Richard Byrne will lead a walking tour of Norfolk’s War Memorials on Saturday, September 2. Meet at the Norfolk Historical Museum at 10 a.m.

 

Deadline for Arts Scholarships

Completed applications for the Battell Arts Foundation Scholarships are due Friday, September 15. These scholarships are awarded twice a year to young people in grades three through 12, for the purpose of enhancing their education in the visual and performing arts. Residents of Norfolk and Colebrook are eligible.

 

72nd Annual Colebrook Fair

A tradition of fun for the whole family! A Community Fair where families and friends celebrate the start of Labor Day Weekend. The Nightingals in Concert

On Sunday, September 24, the all-female group, The Nightingals,will present a free concert at 5 p.m. in the Battell Chapel at the Church of Christ, Norfolk, on the village green. The program includes songs silly and serious in celebration of the power of song. A reception will follow.

 

Amanda Will Bake at Norfolk Farmers Market

Chef Amanda Glover of Amanda Bakes will be at the Norfolk Farmers Market on September 2, 2017 for a book signing and food tasting. Her recently published book is titled “Sweetie: Bake Your Day: Sweet and Savory Baked Goods Anyone Can Make. Sweetie is the moniker of her Airstream trailer food truck. Amanda and Sweetie travel to markets and farms throughout the Litchfield Hills selling delicious breakfasts, desserts, savory and gluten-free baked goods. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Amanda worked at the Mayflower in Washington CT and further honed her skills as a pastry chef at the famed European patisserie Belgique in Kent. She followed this with a stint at the Winvian Resort in Morris where she acquired an appreciation for sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. Amanda will be at the market from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

 

Scarecrows Wanted

As part of the much-anticipated NORFEST celebration, Norfolk residents are invited to create original scarecrows to be displayed around town from October 7 through November 1. Scarecrows should be dropped off at the Artisans Guild on Friday, October 6. Businesses can choose to display their creation(s) in front of their business or may drop them off at the Artisans Guild on Friday. Individuals are also invited to create an entry for the contest, which will be placed from Station Place through John Curtis Road. Entry forms are available at the Guild or can be emailed by contacting the Artisans Guild at 860-542 -5055.

 

Sponsors Welcomed For Car Show

Local business owners are invited to take advantage of an opportunity to be a sponsor of the 5th Annual Classic Community Classic Car Show, which will take place on September 16 at Yale Music Shed’s parking grounds. For a donation of $100 or more, sponsors of the car show will each receive a customized 12” x 18” lawn sign that will be displayed along the Stoeckel estate road that leads to the car show lot. The sign will feature your company name and logo.

Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirt

Keep an eye out for the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirt sale in September. An exact location hasn’t been released yet, but it’s coming up in September and proceeds from the sale of these T-shirts will benefit the Laverne Barbagallo Scholarship Fund, which is under the auspices of the Norfolk Children’s Foundation. Be sure to look for this year’s edition!

 

Poster Contest to Make Norfolk Safe

As part of their traffic calming initiative, the Norfolk Economic Development Commission has announced a poster design contest for elementary school children. The theme is “Norfolk, Drive Safely!” and will focus on getting drivers to travel through town more slowly. October 1 is the deadline for submitting posters, and additional information will be available soon at Botelle School. A prize will be awarded to the student whose poster wins Best in Show.
