Holiday Magic in Colebrook Center

Norfolk Library Classic Film Series

Explore Hollywood’s extensive pre-digital canon of fantastic films, forgotten classics, and silent movies as the Norfolk Library classic film series continues on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., with The Bishop’s Wife, a 1947 Samuel Goldwyn romantic comedy starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven. On January 11, the classic 1952 western High Noon, starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly, will be shown. Come early (6:30 p.m.) for refreshments. Norfolk Historical Society Annual Meeting

On Sunday, Jan. 7, the Norfolk Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at the Norfolk Library. The members’ meeting will be at 1 p.m., followed by a slide talk, Farm to Table a Look Back 100 Years: a Brief History of Food in Norfolk During WWI, presented by Barry Webber. The Historical Society’s beautifully restored WWI posters will also be on display at the library. All are welcome.

 

Holiday Program at the Library

Shadow artist and master illusionist Leland Faulkner will bring his World of Wonder to the Norfolk Library in a special holiday program for all ages on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. Imagine a hat brim that is impossibly twisted into an infinite number of objects, marvel at paper butterflies that appear to dance and multiply, and explore the possibilities of light and shadow as Leland creates a menagerie of silhouettes with only his hands. Colebrook Holiday Open House

The Colebrook Historical Society’s annual Holiday Open House will be on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. Colebrook’s children will perform music of the season, and everyone can join in an old fashioned carol sing.     Megan McTavish, former professional actor and head writer of All My Children and General Hospital, will read the traditional favorite, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.     The festivities will conclude with a special tree lighting, all at the Seymour Inn at intersection of Routes 183 and 182A.     For more information contact Carol Lord atcarol.9508@yahoo.com or 860-738-8244.

 

Taconic Learning Center 

The winter term of the Taconic Learning Center begins on Jan.15, with some very exciting topics, including prohibition, reading Shakespeare, World War I and “Men Plan, God Laughs”, all taught by local residents. To read course descriptions or to register, go to www.taconiclearningcenter.org.

 

Jean Grasmere and Tom Hlas Exhibits at the Library 

Norfolk artist Jean Grasmere will exhibit Wild New England in Oils, Pastels and Watercolors at the Norfolk Library during the month of December. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Sunday, Dec.3, from 4 to 6 p.m. Tom Hlas will exhibit his work in February with an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 28.

 

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for City Meadow Park

On Dec. 9, at 2 p.m., First Selectman Matt Riiska will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the newly-constructed City Meadow Park. All are welcome. Attendees are invited to enter by the Shepard Road entrance.

 

The Hartford Classical Guitar Ensemble 

The sound of a dozen classical guitars will fill the library’s Great Hall on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m. The ensemble was formed in 2011 by a group of classical guitarist enthusiasts and is now directed by award winning classical guitarist Christopher Ladd, chair of the Hartt School Guitar and Harp Program. The ensemble plays a variety of music ranging from J.S. Bach, Poulenc, and Tisserand to the works of contemporary composers Peter Maxwell Davies, Frank Wallace, and Grammy award winner Andrew York. Birds & Bird Migration

On January 13, Great Mountain Forest will present Jane Seymour, Connecticut DEEP wildlife biologist who will discuss a variety of birds that can be found in Connecticut. Topics will include which ones fly south from here and where they go, which ones fly south to here, which ones stay, how they navigate, what they need to survive the winter, some of the threats, and how we can help.
