Another Torch Passed

Peter Giansiracusa, in his VFW uniform, gives his last salute at Memorial Green.

Norfolk’s Memorial Day ceremonies on May 26 will be marked by the annual parade of
marching bands, school groups and servicemen and women. An 81-year- old Navy veteran will
not be marching this year. Hobbled by arthritis, Colebrook resident Peter Giansiracusa will
ride in a horse-drawn buggy as he has done for the past five years. For much longer, since he
became active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in 1946, his voice has rung out the
names of Norfolk’s fallen veterans at the conclusion of the Memorial Day parade. This year, Giansiracusa passes the torch to the next generation and the solemn privilege will be shared by Jim Harrington and Phil Byrne. Thank you, Peter Giansiracusa, for your long service to your country and Norfolk’s Memorial Day traditions.
