Connecticut Trails Day Hike
Take a hike with Dennis Collins of the Norfolk Land Trust on Saturday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. at Dennis Hill State Park. Collins will lead an easy loop hike to the Dennis Hill Gazebo. Meet at the state park trailhead off Route 272 South. Email dgclands@aol.com if you are interested in joining the hike. Rain date is June 2.
Lecture on Black Bears
Great Mountain Forest’s Forest Lyceum Winter and Spring 2013 Lecture Series continues on Saturday, June 1 at the Norfolk Library with a presentation on black bears. Research Professor Stephen DeStefano will begin his presentation promptly at 7:30 p.m. A wine and cheese reception begins at 7 p.m. The bear population is expected to double every five to seven years so now is a good time for us to learn how to be good neighbors with this denizen of the North American forest. Library Featured Artist
An opening reception for June’s featured artist at the library will take place on Sunday, June 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. Bernard Re, Jr.’s art show “Drawing with Nature” features new works made from materials and pigments gathered around Norfolk. The show continues through July 3.
Teen Improvisation Workshop
Junior high and high school students are invited to attend a workshop on comic improvisation on Saturday, June 8 from 4 to 5:15 p.m. at the Norfolk Library. Sponsored by the Battell Arts Foundation, the class will be directed by Diane Canova, founder of Troupe du Jour. Space is limited to 20. The workshop will include pizza and a ticket to the Troupe du Jour improv show, which will follow the workshop, in Battell Chapel at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $15 per person. Colebrook Historical Society’s Summer Exhibit
The Colebrook Historical Society’s 2013 Summer Exhibit is a Celebration of Yesterday’s Toys. All are welcome at an open house on Sunday, June 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. The museum’s summer hours are every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Road Ecology Training
Aton Forest and the Norfolk Conservation Commission are sponsoring Road Ecology training at Town Hall on Friday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Extension Professor Scott Jackson from the UMass Department of Environmental Conservation will cover topics including: the impacts of roads and highways on wildlife and ecosystems, techniques for mitigating impacts, setting priorities for ecological restoration and culverts (addressing storm damage, risk of failure and aquatic organism passage). Aton Forest’s Naturalistic Landscaping Workday
Aton Forest will be holding a Naturalistic Landscaping Workday on Saturday June 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Landscape Designer Larry Weaner will be directing us on projects that will create and demonstrate aesthetically pleasing design in our wild landscape. Lions Club Tag Sale
Vendors are invited to participate in the Lions Club annual tag sale on Saturday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held on Village Green. Tenth Annual Men’s Club Golf Outing
The Men’s Club of Immaculate Conception Church hosts their annual golf outing on Wednesday, June 26 at the Quarry View Golf Course in East Canaan. 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. $95 fee includes greens fee, cart, refreshments on the course and a buffet dinner at Geer.
