Promoting peace and making the world a better place has been the theme at the Church of
Christ, where a giant peace dove and pinwheels with prayers for peace appeared one
weekend in September. The work of the church youth group and Sunday School children,
the dove and pinwheels are part of a global effort begun by Dr. Jane Goodall to foster
respect and compassion for all living things. The church has also erected a “peace pole,”
created by Schuyler and Heather Thomson, which will be the centerpiece of a peace
garden on the grounds. The pole says “May peace prevail on earth” in four languages on
each of its sides, and is based on a design of the World Peace Prayer Society. The garden
is envisioned as a place for quiet contemplation and prayer where all are welcome.
