Celebrating World War II’s Women Veterans
When Norfolk Town Clerk Linda Perkins heard that the Connecticut Veterans’ Service Organizations were organizing a special awards ceremony to honor women who served in World War II, she became curious about] how many Norfolk women served in this war. She took the time to go through the military records on file in the Town Clerk’s office and has compiled a list. Norfolk women Elaine Lucille Antonelle, Lorraine Barstow, Gertrude Brown, Eleanor R. Cook, Ethel D. Kimberly, Mary H. Mellas Janssen, Louise W. Herrick Donhauser, Jessie A. Hotchkiss, Elizabeth R. Ryan and Mary Treadway all served our country during World War II.
Anyone who knows these women or any of their descendants (or any other women who served) is asked to contact Perkins at nfkclerk@snet.net or 860-542-5679. She is also interested in forming a committee to raise funds to have the names of these women added to the monument on Memorial Green and to honor their descendants on Memorial Day. If you would like to help in the formation of this project, just contact Linda Perkins directly.
