Norfolk Then…

Where was this estate with such a decorative entrance? The unidentified photograph is
marked only “George Bratengeier built this in 1900.” The gate and fence bordering the
driveway were masterpieces of the rustic style that was fashionable at the time.
Characterized by the use of twigs, branches and bark, the style had been used in formal
English gardens in the 1700’s and in this country was very popular in the Adirondacks. In
Norfolk, rustic twig chairs, benches, gazebos and fences dotted the landscape. George
Bratengeier was clearly a master of the style. He lived at the southeast corner of
Mountain Road and Golf Drive. However, this may not be the location pictured here.
Take a close look at the terrain and let us know if you can identify it. The stone pillars
may still be standing.
