Mobiles Enchant at the Library

By the time of the opening reception for Bradford Robinson’s exhibition at the Norfolk Library, nine of the artworks had already been sold—setting a record, as far as anyone can remember. The library contacted the artist, and he brought four more pieces to hang up just 45 minutes before the opening started.

The colorful, delicate, dancing mobiles—of cranes, a hummingbird, a whale, a shark, a dragon—have delighted everyone who’s seen them. Robinson’s background as a biologist is reflected in his subject matter, and his interest in Alexander Calder and Asian art is revealed by the delicacy and grace, humor and whimsy, of his work. Robinson’s mobiles are in several private collections, and a major piece was hung in Hartford Hospital in 1998.

Kristin Mudge, of the Library Associates art committee, says, “We think every artist we choose is interesting, but we never know what the reaction of the public will be. It’s always gratifying when an artist is enthusiastically received!” It’s not too late to catch Robinson’s appealing artworks, which are on display in the library until May 2.
