W. Brewster Kopp

W. Brewster Kopp, age 93, passed away on Dec. 18 in Buckeystown, Md., where he had lived for the last 12 years. Kopp owned property on Winchester Road in Norfolk since 1961. He was born in Newark, N.Y., the son of Frederick and Bernice Woodworth Kopp. After graduating from Harvard College in 1947 and Harvard Business School in 1949, he embarked on a career in finance that spanned five decades. The highlight of his career was his service as assistant secretary of the army for financial management (1965-67). He then served as chief financial officer of Digital Equipment Corporation and Otis Elevator Company. He also worked at American Can Company, the First National Bank of Boston, the American Stock Exchange and Publicker Industries. He is survived by three sons, Bradford (Jean), Jeffrey (Susan) and Alexander, and by three grandsons (Duncan, Tyler and Andrew). Brewster lived much of his life in Newark, New York City, Boston and Greenwich, Conn. He loved working in the woods and fields of his old farm in Norfolk and driving his 1947 International Farmall Cub tractor. He also enjoyed his cabin in Pitkin, Colo. A devout Christian, he was active in a number of churches, particularly Stanwich Congregational Church in Greenwich. He served on the boards of Biblica (The International Bible Society), among a long list of nonprofit organizations. He was very proud of a profile in Forbes magazine in 1998 about his charity work. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 11 a.m. at the Stanwich Congregational Church in Greenwich, and the burial will be in North Cohocton, N.Y.
