Earth Day Celebration at Great Mountain Forest
A large group gathered at Great Mountain Forest on April 22 to celebrate its first-ever Earth Day Camp Fire Poetry Reading. It was a beautiful evening, with a pink sky to the west and the sun reflecting off the hills to the east. Various selections were chosen by each of the scheduled readers—works by Robert Frost, Aldo Leopold, Robert Service, William Wordsworth and many others. The readers were Holly Torrant and Schuyler Thomson from Norfolk, Betsy Howie and Jean Bronson from Falls Village, Hunter Neal from Salisbury and Alesia Maltz from Colebrook. Vance Cannon (pictured here with book in hand) performed the song “Branching Out” by John Gorka. After a break for refreshments with a forest theme, the group reconvened to hear some selections from members of the audience. Included were original poems by Corey Bush and 8-year-old Daniel Vandiver. Plans are in the works for another poetry reading on a summer evening.
