Geer Closing Outpatient Physical Therapy Unit

News Brief

In response to financial difficulties, due in large part to the pandemic and its aftereffects, Geer Village Senior Community has decided to close its Outpatient Physical Therapy department on Sept. 16.

In a recent press release, Kevin O’Connell, CEO of Geer Village, listed inflation, rising energy costs and inadequate reimbursements from insurance plans, coupled with a decreasing number of residents, as factors behind this decision. The news came as a surprise to the two therapists on staff, Michael Mangini and James O’Brien.

But there is relief in sight for local clients, including many in Norfolk who have come to rely on receiving high-quality physical therapy at Geer. Mangini, who has been director of Outpatient Therapy since 1997, has decided to rent the space from Geer and open his own practice there.

Mangini is close to agreeing to a rental agreement with Geer for the 1,500-square-foot space. He plans to be open for only minimal hours, two days a week, for the last two weeks in September, but then be open full-time starting on Oct. 1.
